Overview
Honeywell Searchline Excel Open Path Fixed Gas Detector | Infrared (IR) Flammable Gas Detection for Marine, Offshore & Industrial Applications
The Honeywell Searchline Excel Open Path Fixed Gas Detector is a high-performance open path infrared (IR) gas detection system designed for continuous monitoring of combustible hydrocarbon gases in hazardous industrial and marine environments. Unlike conventional point gas detectors that monitor gas concentration at a single location, the Searchline Excel detects gas leaks over an extended optical path between a transmitter and receiver, providing rapid and reliable detection across large areas.
Using advanced infrared absorption technology, the Honeywell Searchline Excel continuously monitors the atmosphere for hydrocarbon gas leaks while remaining highly resistant to false alarms caused by environmental conditions. Its long-range monitoring capability makes it an ideal solution for protecting critical facilities where early gas leak detection is essential for personnel safety, environmental protection, and asset integrity.
The Honeywell Searchline Excel is widely installed on offshore oil & gas platforms, FPSOs, LNG terminals, petrochemical plants, oil refineries, compressor stations, tank farms, marine vessels, loading terminals, and industrial processing facilities where combustible gas leaks may occur over large open areas.
Engineered for demanding hazardous locations, the Searchline Excel features a rugged explosion-proof enclosure, automatic optical alignment assistance, built-in diagnostics, advanced signal processing, and excellent immunity to fog, rain, snow, sunlight, and airborne contaminants. The detector supports industry-standard 4–20 mA analog output, HART® communication, relay interfaces, and integration with PLC, DCS, SCADA, Fire & Gas, and Emergency Shutdown (ESD) systems, ensuring seamless compatibility with modern industrial safety infrastructures.
Its ability to monitor gas over distances of up to 210 metres (model dependent) significantly reduces the number of detectors required to protect large facilities, lowering installation costs while improving overall safety coverage.

Why Choose Honeywell Searchline Excel?
The Honeywell Searchline Excel is trusted by operators worldwide because it provides reliable combustible gas monitoring over long distances where conventional point detectors cannot offer sufficient coverage.
Its open path infrared technology enables earlier detection of gas leaks across large process areas, improving safety while reducing the total number of detectors required. This results in lower installation costs, simplified maintenance, and improved operational efficiency.
For marine, offshore, petrochemical, LNG, refinery, and industrial facilities seeking dependable long-range gas detection, the Searchline Excel remains one of the industry's leading open path gas detection solutions.
Working Principle
The Honeywell Searchline Excel operates using infrared absorption spectroscopy. The transmitter emits a controlled infrared beam toward the receiver positioned across the monitoring area.
When hydrocarbon gases enter the optical path, they absorb specific infrared wavelengths. The receiver measures this absorption and calculates the gas concentration expressed in LEL·m (Lower Explosive Limit × metres).
The detector continuously analyzes the optical signal while compensating for environmental influences such as rain, fog, sunlight, and dust. If gas concentrations exceed preset alarm thresholds, the Searchline Excel activates alarm outputs and transmits measurement data through 4–20 mA and HART® communication to connected safety systems.
